By Budi Putra | September 29, 2006

National Informatics Center announced today it has partnered with IBM to power the National Portal of India enabling anytime, anywhere delivery of government services to its citizens. The enhanced portal, based on open standards and service oriented architecture from IBM, will provide a “single point entry” to government information and services resulting in greater transparency and responsiveness.
Through this partnership, IBM brings its global expertise to train the NIC team and robust software making the portal much more user friendly, secure and scalable.
The portal aims to add breakthrough features like search, personalization and localization of content to suit the diverse requirements of citizens of India. IBM and NIC will also work towards ensuring universal accessibility of the Portal for the physically challenged and those using handheld devices.
Announcing the partnership, Dr. Vijayaditya, Director General of NIC said, “The national portal is driven by the objective of bringing transparency and trust to aspects of good governance.”
Erwin Sukiato, Country Manager, Software Group, PT IBM Indonesia said, “IBM is committed to enabling governments deliver innovative services to their constituents. This phase of the National Portal gives the government an opportunity to improve the quality of services, to increase customer satisfaction, and to meet the demands of an ever-changing landscape and citizen sophistication.”
With more than 10 million hits a month and 10,000 registered users today, NIC envisages that its enhanced platform and features will make the portal the destination, for people in India and globally, to access information and services.
With a population of 1.1 billion people and one of the fastest growing economies in the world (averaging 8% GDP over the past three years), the Indian government is focused not only on improving services to its citizens but increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of its people to participate in the process of governance.
