Facebook offers photos bigger, faster
Posted on August 27, 2011 by Budi Putra in Tech
Facebook turns out as one of popular photo sharing services: at least 250 million photos uploaded each day. That’s HUGE. No wonder Facebook seriously pays attention into this feature. This time, Facebook photos get size boost:
Bigger Photos, Faster Loading
Now, the photos you share on Facebook are bigger (720 pixels to 960 pixels) and load twice as fast, giving you quicker access to more detailed images. Photos you’ve already uploaded to your profile will also be displayed at this higher resolution.
Focus on the Photo
After we launched the first version of the photo viewer earlier this year, we received feedback from many of you and have made changes based on it. Today, we are rolling out a more streamlined photo viewer that features a cleaner interface that makes it even easier to enjoy your photos. The light box is now set against a simple white background that puts more of the focus on the photo, and less on the surrounding frame.
Facebook bans Google+ ad

At the end of the day, business is business. Please keep it in mind.
Michael Lee Johnson writes:
LOL: I recently ran a Google+ advertisement on Facebook that got all of my campaigns suspended. – Great.
The message from Failbook said the following:
Your account has been disabled. All of your adverts have been stopped and should not be run again on the site under any circumstances. Generally, we disable an account if too many of its adverts violate our Terms of Use or Advertising guidelines. Unfortunately we cannot provide you with the specific violations that have been deemed abusive. Please review our Terms of Use and Advertising guidelines if you have any further questions.
Google+ is nice, but I still prefer Twitter
Posted on July 14, 2011 by Budi Putra in Tech
I should admit that, Google+ is a nice platform. At least, they offer the original feature: Circles. But since friends I have here are almost similar to my Twitter friends, I prefer staying longer on the 140 characters world. At least, at the moment.
That Google’s intention to launch this new service is originally to catch up Facebook, rather than Twitter, that’s another story.
Introducing my blog’s Facebook page

I decided to create and maintain a Facebook page for this blog and putting the Facebook Like button at the sidebar of this blog.
My goal is simple: to engage my blog’s readers and community. I want to hear their feedbacks — either any inputs for my blog or blog post’s ideas.

Facebook to launch its Groupon rival
Posted on April 7, 2011 by Budi Putra in Business
Facebook is about to launch another new product — a newest competitor for Groupon, Living Social and the 40 other daily deals sites. However it could be a tough effort for the largest social network service, according to Guardian.
Rather than reading and binning a daily deals email from a service you’ve signed up to that keeps sending things that don’t interest you, Facebook knows which deals you’d like before you do. The potential is vast. The challenge will be to compose the service in a way that rivals Groupon et al for simplicity – something Facebook has not been very good at.
Why is Facebook so popular in Indonesia?
Posted on April 1, 2011 by Budi Putra in Culture, Media, People, Tech
That’s a regular question that I, or you, got these days following the booming of the social network in the country. No kidding: They have more than 35 million users in Indonesia already!
There are more than 642 million users are using this service globally. Indonesia is the second biggest Facebook users in the world, after United States. So, welcome to Indonesia, ‘the Republic of the Facebook‘!
Some Quora users have good answers on this, from technical perspective to cultural and social behaviour of Indonesian people.
“There are more people who know Facebook but have never heard of the Internet. Some thought Facebook was a BlackBerry invention so they bought BlackBerry devices just to get on Facebook,” says Aulia Masna.
“Put it simple, peer pressure. People using Facebook and telling their friends to join Facebook as well,” Rama Mamuaya explaines. “Indonesia is Facebook in real life…Indonesian culture is based on sharing, communication and solidarity….” Danny Hefer says.
“Many Indonesians like to show off, or don’t want to lose face,” Ronny Haryanto writes. “It’s called ‘Latah’,” Chris Prakoso adds.
“Because most of Indonesians are narcissistic,” Connie Panjenengan explains and “FB is the right place to show yourself off,” Dwi Rezeki Kirana Bangun says.
However, in term of updating or publishing, Facebook is much easier than, let’s say, blogging in a personal blog. “Facebook doesn’t require continuous attention. So posting something or reading updates can be done in a few minutes,” Ronny Haryanto adds another insight.

Facebook now worth $50 billion!

Facebook hits the world’s headlines today with its new cash: The popular social networking site has raised $500 million from Goldman Sachs and a Russian investor at a $50 billion valuation, the New York Times’ Dealbook reports.
What should Facebook do with its new cash? Many things, for sure. They will have more firepower “to steal away valuable employees, develop new products and possibly pursue acquisitions.” Or preparing a robust strategy in order to conquer the Chinese market –which is currently banned.
Let’s see.
Zuckerberg deserves to be TIME’s Person of the Year…three years ago!
Posted on December 16, 2010 by Budi Putra in Featured, Media, People
No doubt that Mark Zuckerberg is one of a few brightest CEOs in the world. But naming him as TIME’s Person of the Year?
For connecting more than half a billion people and mapping the social relations among them; for creating a new system of exchanging information; and for changing how we all live our lives, Mark Elliot Zuckerberg is TIME’s 2010 Person of the Year.
Lame. “Time Magazine just named its Person of The Year 2007,” someone tweeted. Yes. TIME is no longer a news magazine now. It’s a brand new history magazine! :-)
Share your pictures to Get Lost in Indonesia
Posted on November 7, 2010 by Budi Putra in Travel
This is another great example on how to use “user generated” approach to produce contents and engage new community. “Get lost in Indonesia” (GLii) project started to use Facebook page to invite users to share their travel pictures and stories. At least 4,000 pictures have been uploaded so far!
“We would like to believe that God created Indonesia when he was smiling,” said Rayan Muktiaki, one of the three men behind the Get Lost in Indonesia project.
“That’s why we have so many different islands, ethnic tribes, languages and wild species, more than most other countries. So why is it so difficult to sell Indonesia to the rest of the world?”
This was the basic premise that led Rayan, together with his colleagues Ibnu Zacharyas and Aria Gorba Hamdani, at a creative communications company in Jakarta to establish the Get Lost in Indonesia project.

Welcome to Indonesia, the Republic of the Facebook!

Did you know the number of Indonesian Facebook users now are reaching 30 million, thanks to the fast growing local mobile users. Amazing!
Indonesia, a Southeast Asian country that has nearly tripled its number of Facebook users over the past year, has finally eclipsed the United Kingdom as the second-largest Facebook market behind the United States. Its growth underpins Facebook’s emerging strength in Southeast Asia, a region has become strategic, rife with opportunities to push virtual goods and Credits.
As the world’s fourth more populous country, Indonesia promises to be one of Facebook’s key markets for years to come with 29.4 million users. Spread out across thousands of islands, Indonesia is a patchwork nation; the country’s official language Bahasa grew out of centuries of trading between hundreds of ethnic groups. Only a small minority of people in the country actually speak Bahasa as their mother tongue.

Facebook declined in Asia?
Posted on October 26, 2010 by Budi Putra in Tech
Amid the fast growing of Facebook in Asia Pacific lately, blogger Jeremy Wagstaff discovered that its membership in the region tends to decline.
Membership of Facebook in developed Asia Pacific territories declined for the first time in a year in September, suggesting, possibly, that interest in the social networking site in the region has peaked. The figures may also reveal insights on whether, in developing countries, a social networking site can break out of their middle class enclaves.
Facebook populations in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Hong Kong all fell during the month, while those in Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines all either grew only marginally or shrank somewhat. Hong Kong dropped by the largest margin—5.7%—while Thailand, alone among the countries under study, grew by more or less the same amount.
Looks like Facebook should offer a kind of interesting “gimmick” or new killer feature in order to make their users stay longer; and keep inviting and engaging their friends through this service. In my case, frankly speaking, I still couldn’t find any factor which keeps me returning to Facebook regularly. How about you?
