The 10 funniest tweets during the Oscars

Did you tweet during the Oscars broadcast recently? I agreed that sometimes tweets were more entertaining than the show itself, like the AP writer found:

  • "Shhhh. I'm live tweeting from directly under Sandra Bullocks chair." — Rainn Wilson (@rainnwilson), actor.
  • "Charlize Theron would like to thank R. Crumb and my 16-year-old id for designing her outfit tonight." — David Itzkoff (@ditzkoff), New York Times reporter.
  • "Just got lost for a minute, sorry. Where was I? Oh yeah ... Zach Effron's (Zac Efron) eyes!" — Rob Corddry (@robcorddr), comedian.
  • "Looks like a Young Victoria sweep." — David Wain (@davidwain), comedian.
  • "Shortest Oscar story in history: ( ! > $ )" — Roger Ebert (@ebertchicago), film critic.
  • "Jeff Bridges is quickly closing in on Matthew McConaughey for `best actor who has become a character from an early movie.'" — Bill Simmons (@sportsguy33), ESPN columnist.
  • "Oscars Fun Fact — Samuel L. Jackson spends 40 percent of his yearly income on Kangol hats ..." — Eric Stangel (@EricStangel), "Late Show With David Letterman" writer-producer.
  • "Oh, Sam Worthington, your glasses make me think you're imperfect and therefore accessible." — Mindy Kaling (@mindykaling), actor-writer.
  • "Oprah's about to tell everyone in the audience there's an Oscar under their seat." — Foster Kamer (@weareyourfek), blogger.
  • "James Cameron is going into his own hurt locker right now." — Paul Scheer (@paulscheer), comedian.

How to quantify 10 billion tweets on Twitter

Here we go: One year ago Twitter generated one billion tweets; four months ago with 5 billion tweets; and now, Twitter hit another milestone: 10 billion tweets!

Andrew Mager just blogged regarding some cool facts about how large 10 billion really is:

From Wikipedia

  • About 109 minutes ago, the Roman Empire was flourishing. (109 minutes is roughly 1,900 years.)
  • About 109 hours ago, modern human beings and their ancestors were living in the Stone Age (more precisely, the Middle Paleolithic). (109 hours is roughly 114,000 years.)
  • About 109 years ago, the first multicellular eukaryotes appeared on Earth.
  • 109 centimetres is about the distance from Chicago to Tokyo.
  • The possession of assets with total value of 109 US dollars would place a person among the world’s wealthiest individuals.

You cannot copyright your Tweet!

Dear Tweeple, please note this: you can't copyright or "license" what you said on Twitter. Since the messages are too short and in the public domain.

Contrary to popular belief and Twitter’s terms of service, you cannot copyright a Tweet. Under US law, copyright is granted on publication to “original works of authorship” finalized in “fixed forms of expression” but this does not extend to names, titles, or short phrases (PDF).

As messages sent via Twitter cannot be longer than 140 characters, they cannot be copyrighted. However original, witty, or profound they may be, nothing more than good manners protects your original expression of authorship. If you wish to let other people quote or use your Tweets, you need not “license” them; indeed, technically, you cannot license them, since they are in the public domain the instant you publish them.

Breaking: Yahoo partners with Twitter!

This is Yahoo!'s latest move into social media landscape. You'll see real-time public Twitter updates on Yahoo! News, Finance, Entertainment as well as Search. Cool.

Not to be left out of the Twitter partnership spree, Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO) is set to announce a deal with Twitter this evening to integrate the microblogging service across its properties worldwide. Yahoo users will now be able to access their personal Twitter feeds and update their Twitter status on Yahoo sites, including the home page (which already allowed users to edit their status on social networks including MySpace and Facebook). In addition, Yahoo says that all of its properties—including News, Finance, Entertainment and Sports—will soon feature “real-time public Twitter updates.” And like Microsoft’s Bing and Google, Yahoo will also add real-time Twitter results to its search engine.

Dalai Lama officially joins Twitter

Looking forward to see His Holiness' upcoming tweets...

This Dalai Lama is verified by Twitter, though — it is the real deal. Currently, the account is pulling albums and blog posts from his website and tweeting them via twitterfeed, though we bet you’ll see real engagement later on.

Want to tweet for Obama?

President Barack Obama is looking for an official Tweeple. Hohohoho... that's an interesting and exciting job, right? Anyone interested?

The Democratic National Committee’s “social networks manager” job description says the position entails maintaining the President’s accounts on Facebook, Twitter and MySpace.

Mia Cambronero, who currently holds the job, “will be stepping down from my infamous role as ‘Barack Obama’s twitterer,’” she said in an email message posted to a listserv. “We’re looking for someone who is available to start immediately.”

The new hire will work closely with the rest of the new media department to execute grassroots campaigns to advance the President’s agenda for change, the listing says. Among the qualifications sought: “Ready to work hard; this isn’t a 9-5 sort of job.”

Twitter: Over 1 billion tweets a month

As of December, Twitter served more than one billion tweets per month, according to Pingdom research. January even passed 1.2 billion, meaning that Twitter seeing average almost 40 million tweets per day!

Over the past few months there has been plenty of speculation around the Web that Twitter’s growth has stalled, but if we look at activity on Twitter in terms of the number of tweets, this is far from the truth.

Google launching Twitter-killer!

Following the launch of Yahoo's "status-casting" for its email service back in August 2009, Google will also allow its email users to their update status. Google could announce "the Twitter-killer" as soon as this week, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The prompt reads, "let people know what you're up to, or share links to photos, videos, and Web pages." But every time a user updates their status, the previous update disappears into the ether.

The WSJ says the new feature will "allow Gmail users to view a stream of status updates from people they choose to connect with." It will be tightly integrated with Google's video-sharing site YouTube and its photo-sharing site Picasa.
