Fast Follow: Start following tweets on your phone even if you don't have an account!

The micro-blogging service Twitter just announced a cool way for mobile users to quickly start following certain tweets —even if they don't have a Twitter account! It is a smart move to get more people trying Twitter.

Anyone in the US can receive Tweets on their phone even if they haven’t signed up for Twitter. This is a simple way for people to get information they care about in real-time. For example, let’s say you want to get Tweets from New York City’s office of emergency management (@NotifyNYC). Just text ‘follow NotifyNYC’ to 40404 in the US.

Twitter is also working with carriers to bring it to other countries.

Android TweetDeck, starting beta test this week

I am currently using Seesmic for Android -- that's a nice app for Twitter though, but TweetDeck for Android is also worth trying... Can't wait to get this on my Droid!

To get straight to the point, we're nearing completion of Android TweetDeck and we've really been pushing the limits of what Android can do. Hence we will be opening up a public beta testing period this week for some serious device testing. But before all that happens I wanted to briefly explain what Android TweetDeck means to us because it's more than just TweetDeck on Android.

First off, we've built Android TweetDeck from the ground up to be true multi-stream, laser focused on showing you all your friends' cross-service activity in one app. Multi-column is still the order of the day but now columns are blended based on the type of activity rather than the service. And all this whilst retaining the most powerful functionality from each included service.

We've spent an inordinate amount of time making the app silky smooth from the column scrolling to the custom views - so much so that one of Google's Android Developer Advocates recently described it as "a thing of beauty". So look out for the beta test later this week and please do get involved.

Indonesian filmmaker among Twitter's most influential handles

A new approach called IP-Influence found that Indonesian filmmaker Joko Anwar (@jokoanwar) is one of Twitter's most influential handles. The study suggests that getting their links retweeted is much more crucial than popularity --in term of number of followers, for instance.

According to this study, the following is Twitter's most influential accounts:

@mashable, @jokoanwar, @google, @aplusk, @syfy, @smashingmag, @michellemalkin,@theonion, @rww, @breakingnews

"A unique analysis of influence on Twitter shows that an obscure Indonesian filmmaker is just as good at propagating memes as @Google..."

World Cup, the most popular web event ever

No wonder if The 2010 FIFA World Cup is becoming the most popular event in Web history. The official FIFA World Cup website is currently receiving as many page views as Facebook, the event itself gets "3,000 tweets per second" and Univision.com's live streaming generates 16 million page views.

Twitter to launch its URL shortener, Amazon goes pro with Bit.Ly

URL shortener thing is really a big deal, thanks to the needs to the microblogging services, mobile phones and any kind of manual text-entry. It's "a renaissance in the age of Twitter," according to Danny Sullivan. URL shortening is a technique where a provider makes a web page available under a very short URL in addition to the original address.

Twitter has just announced that it will be launching its own URL shortener, while Amazon has launched it’s own shortened URL, amzn.to, powered by bit.ly’s new Pro service.

By the way, how useful of the URL shortener for you? Which shortening service did you use frequently?

Mobile phone inventor using Droid and iPhone!

Martin Marty Cooper (born December 26, 1928 in Chicago, Illinois, USA) is considered the inventor of the first handheld cellular phone. Right now, he is using Droid mostly; also mentioned iPhone; and admitted trying every cell phone out.

Cspan: What kind of cell phone do you have?

Martin Cooper: “It depends when you ask me. I, always have the latest cell phone, and I try every cell phone out, only because people like you keep asking me. Right now I’m using Droid, because I want to get some experience with the Android operating system, and I so far, have some pretty favorable results. I’ve had an iPhone, which I gave to my grandson, which he used for three months and then I had to upgrade to a  better version. And I’ve tried many other phones. For my day to day conversations I actually use the Jitterbug. So I carry two phones, one very simple phone that I can flip open that has a very simple phone book and nothing else. But when I want to twitter - tweet, then, I use my Droid.”

The 10 funniest tweets during the Oscars

Did you tweet during the Oscars broadcast recently? I agreed that sometimes tweets were more entertaining than the show itself, like the AP writer found:

  • "Shhhh. I'm live tweeting from directly under Sandra Bullocks chair." — Rainn Wilson (@rainnwilson), actor.
  • "Charlize Theron would like to thank R. Crumb and my 16-year-old id for designing her outfit tonight." — David Itzkoff (@ditzkoff), New York Times reporter.
  • "Just got lost for a minute, sorry. Where was I? Oh yeah ... Zach Effron's (Zac Efron) eyes!" — Rob Corddry (@robcorddr), comedian.
  • "Looks like a Young Victoria sweep." — David Wain (@davidwain), comedian.
  • "Shortest Oscar story in history: ( ! > $ )" — Roger Ebert (@ebertchicago), film critic.
  • "Jeff Bridges is quickly closing in on Matthew McConaughey for `best actor who has become a character from an early movie.'" — Bill Simmons (@sportsguy33), ESPN columnist.
  • "Oscars Fun Fact — Samuel L. Jackson spends 40 percent of his yearly income on Kangol hats ..." — Eric Stangel (@EricStangel), "Late Show With David Letterman" writer-producer.
  • "Oh, Sam Worthington, your glasses make me think you're imperfect and therefore accessible." — Mindy Kaling (@mindykaling), actor-writer.
  • "Oprah's about to tell everyone in the audience there's an Oscar under their seat." — Foster Kamer (@weareyourfek), blogger.
  • "James Cameron is going into his own hurt locker right now." — Paul Scheer (@paulscheer), comedian.
