Twitter breaks news of Osama bin Laden’s death!

Posted on May 2, 2011 by in Politics

How the announcement on the death of the most wanted terrorist and the leader of al Qaeda, Osama Bin Laden leak out? According to Brian Stelter of NYT, Twitter broke the news first. Yes, it’s coming from a tweet sent by Keith Urbahn, the chief of staff for the former defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld.

That speculation was not aired out on television immediately, but it did erupt on Twitter and other social networking Web sites. Wishful thinking about bin Laden’s death ricocheted across the Web — and then, at 10:25 p.m., while Mr. Obama was writing his speech, one particular tweet seemed to confirm it. Keith Urbahn, the chief of staff for the former defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld, wrote at that time, “So I’m told by a reputable person they have killed Osama Bin Laden. Hot damn.”

Mr. Urbahn quickly added, “Don’t know if it’s true, but let’s pray it is.” He was credited by many on the Web with breaking the news, though he did not have first-hand confirmation.

  • Update: President Obama has addressed the nation to announce that the United States has killed Osama bin Laden. Check-out the full transcript here!

Twitter News Service? Why not, Biz Stone says

Posted on November 25, 2010 by in Media

SOONER OR LATER, Twitter will do something with news network –but with different approach. It receives almost 100 million tweets each day from its 175 million users, a report says. Actually, Twiter has shared these feeds with Google, Yahoo! and Bing –and eager to jump to the next level.

Biz Stone, the co-founder of popular microblogging site Twitter, is eager to harness the vast quantities of information that it helps its users share to create a news network, he told Reuters on Monday.

A Twitter news network would not necessarily be run by Twitter itself but would be in partnership with several existing news organizations, and would be open, Stone said.

Hmmm. It’s an interesting business model, I guess.

Indonesia’s most followed media on Twitter

Posted on November 5, 2010 by in Featured, Media

SINCE TWITTER TOOK OVER the media “role”, the large media organizations see this as an opportunity to reach and engage their readers online.

That idea is totally valid. When it comes to breaking news and exclusive news, everyone still relies on mainstream media. Public always wanted to get the confirmed informations and the in-depth stories from the media guys, because they  have their own infrastructure, networks, editors, writers and reporters.

If you are into Indonesian news and updates; and love Twitter, you’re so lucky. You can follow a bunch of local media Twitter accounts –some of them have thousands of followers (please keep in mind that only media with than 10,000 followers added to the list).

Social media in Asia differ from U.S., Europe

Posted on October 23, 2010 by in Tech

How to win in Asia? Any online player should learn every market in the region very closely. There is no single winning factor here. According to a recent study, Asia Pacific has even some of the earliest and successful locally developed social media sites.

“The Asia Pacific social media market is highly diverse and in many places evolving rapidly,” said Nick Ingelbrecht, research director at Gartner. “While global sites fare better in more westernized Asian markets such as Australia, some of Asia’s biggest markets have evolved their own unique social network services distinct from those of Europe and North America.”

In China, Japan and South Korea, the growth of social networking has been driven by strong consumer interest in online games, while India’s social networking market has been spurred by demand for online dating and matchmaking sites.

How about Indonesia? Why did Facebook win here?

Asia, the tweeting continent

Posted on September 29, 2010 by in Tech

Asian tweeps just outpaced the US users in term of numbers, according to a research company.

“Twitter users in Asia, mainly located in Japan, Indonesia and South Korea, account for 37 percent of tweets,” said Semiocast, which studied 2.9 million tweets over 24 hours on June 22.

Fast Follow: Start following tweets on your phone even if you don’t have an account!

Posted on August 11, 2010 by in Tech

The micro-blogging service Twitter just announced a cool way for mobile users to quickly start following certain tweets —even if they don’t have a Twitter account! It is a smart move to get more people trying Twitter.

Anyone in the US can receive Tweets on their phone even if they haven’t signed up for Twitter. This is a simple way for people to get information they care about in real-time. For example, let’s say you want to get Tweets from New York City’s office of emergency management (@NotifyNYC). Just text ‘follow NotifyNYC’ to 40404 in the US.

Twitter is also working with carriers to bring it to other countries.

Android TweetDeck, starting beta test this week

Posted on August 10, 2010 by in Tech

I am currently using Seesmic for Android — that’s a nice app for Twitter though, but TweetDeck for Android is also worth trying… Can’t wait to get this on my Droid!

To get straight to the point, we’re nearing completion of Android TweetDeck and we’ve really been pushing the limits of what Android can do. Hence we will be opening up a public beta testing period this week for some serious device testing. But before all that happens I wanted to briefly explain what Android TweetDeck means to us because it’s more than just TweetDeck on Android.

First off, we’ve built Android TweetDeck from the ground up to be true multi-stream, laser focused on showing you all your friends’ cross-service activity in one app. Multi-column is still the order of the day but now columns are blended based on the type of activity rather than the service. And all this whilst retaining the most powerful functionality from each included service.

We’ve spent an inordinate amount of time making the app silky smooth from the column scrolling to the custom views – so much so that one of Google’s Android Developer Advocates recently described it as “a thing of beauty”. So look out for the beta test later this week and please do get involved.

Indonesian filmmaker among Twitter’s most influential handles

Posted on August 6, 2010 by in People

A new approach called IP-Influence found that Indonesian filmmaker Joko Anwar (@jokoanwar) is one of Twitter’s most influential handles. The study suggests that getting their links retweeted is much more crucial than popularity –in term of number of followers, for instance.

According to this study, the following is Twitter’s most influential accounts:

@mashable, @jokoanwar, @google, @aplusk, @syfy, @smashingmag, @michellemalkin,@theonion, @rww, @breakingnews

“A unique analysis of influence on Twitter shows that an obscure Indonesian filmmaker is just as good at propagating memes as @Google…”

Posted on June 20, 2010 by in Sport

No wonder if The 2010 FIFA World Cup is becoming the most popular event in Web history. The official FIFA World Cup website is currently receiving as many page views as Facebook, the event itself gets “3,000 tweets per second” and Univision.com’s live streaming generates 16 million page views.
